K-12 Program Applications
Algae Academy, Summer Algae Science Institute, and Cultivate
Are you ready to apply to one of the Algae Foundation's K-12 programs for the 26/27 academic year? If so, you are in the right place! A few things to note before you get started...
1. This page contains applications for 3 separate programs. See a quick snapshot below or keep scrolling for more info on each program. Choose which one is right for you and apply!
- Algae Academy: A 5-part, hands-on, algae-centered curriculum that will have your students asking big questions as to how algae impact our world. Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. This is our flagship program that has been facilitated by over 3,800 educators nationwide.
- Summer Algae Science Institute (SASI): Virtual professional development workshop that introduces new teachers to the Algae Academy curriculum.
- Cultivate: 2-week, algae-based curriculum that introduces algae through an ag lens. Intended for high school classrooms.
2. Algae Academy Application: There are two applications - one for NEW teachers and one for RETURNING teachers. A few things to know...
- If you participated in 25/26 and have not completed the Teacher Feedback Survey, please do so. This is required to participate in 26/27.
- Please only apply on behalf of your classroom and students. Do not apply on behalf of a co-teacher or someone else. If you know someone else in your school who is interested in participating, send them the link!
- Dates are not flexible; the dates listed are the available dates to participate. Hopefully, one works for you! Please plan accordingly around all school closures.
- Returning teachers, you will need to know your remaining supply inventory when you apply.
3. Submitting your application to any of our programs does not guarantee you a spot. If accepted, you will receive an email with more details. Follow the instructions in that email to secure your spot for 26/27. Acceptances are sent on a rolling basis.

Algae Academy FAQ
Is there a fee to participate?
Nope! Algae Academy is 100% free. All we ask is that you have your students complete the pre- and post-tests and that you complete the Teacher Feedback Survey after you are done.
How long does Algae Academy take to facilitate in the classroom?
Algae Academy is split into 5 parts and usually takes 5 class periods. However, many teachers like to split Part 1 into 2 class periods to dive a bit deeper.
I am not sure how many of students I will have next year, what should I do?
Give us your best guess. We will touch base when school starts to double-check your numbers.
The dates offered don't work for me, can I choose a different date?
Unfortunately, no. We grow up and harvest our algae at specific times each year. Harvesting outside of the posted schedule puts our algae crop at risk.
Will someone be coming into my classroom to facilitate the Algae Academy?
You will be facilitating with your students! The curriculum is sent via Google Drive and lab supplies and live algae are shipped to your school.

Can I use the Cultivate curriculum with multiple class periods?
Yes, if you have the space. Each class will run its field trial using 3 raceway ponds. Each racyway is 26in x 14in. If space allows, you can certainly have multiple classes participate.
Is there anything I need to provide for this program?
The only item not provided by the Algae Foundation is the water needed to fill the raceways. You will need 9 gallons of distilled water.
After Cultivate, can we use the raceways for other experiments?
Of course! And we hope you do.
